Mini ovens: a practical buying guide
A mini oven (tabletop oven) is a compact electric oven that sits on the worktop. It is handy in small kitchens, flats and caravans, or as a second oven at busy times.
1. Size in litres
- Under 20 litres: toast, small pizzas, reheating.
- 20–35 litres: most everyday cooking, including a small chicken.
- 35–45 litres and more: close to a small built-in oven; room for larger dishes.
2. Hotplates
Some models have one or two hotplates on top, so they can work as a small cooker. Useful where there is no hob.
3. Functions
Look for top and bottom heat you can control separately, a grill, and ideally a fan (convection) for even baking. A rotisserie is a nice extra, not a must.
4. Practical checks
- The outside gets hot: leave space around it and check the manufacturer's clearance advice.
- A timer with an automatic switch-off.
- A removable crumb tray and an interior light.
