How to choose an air fryer
Air fryers cook with fast-moving hot air, so you get crisp food with little or no oil. Here is what actually matters when you choose one.
1. Size: match it to your household
- 2–4 litres: one or two people, sides and snacks.
- 4–6 litres: most couples and small families.
- 6 litres and up, or dual drawers: families, or cooking a main and a side at the same time.
Check the outside size too. Air fryers take more worktop space than people expect.
2. One basket or two?
Dual-drawer models let you cook two things at different temperatures and finish them together. A single large basket is better for big items like a whole chicken.
3. Power and running costs
Most air fryers use between 1,200 and 2,400 watts. Because they heat a small space and cook quickly, they usually cost less to run than heating a full oven for small meals.
4. Features worth paying for
- A window or light, so you can check food without opening it.
- Non-stick baskets that are dishwasher safe.
- Simple, readable controls. More presets do not mean better cooking.
5. Things to watch for
- Noise: fans can be loud, so check reviews if your kitchen is open-plan.
- Basket coating: look for clear care instructions and a decent warranty.
